数年前チープカシオが、ちょっとしたブームになった。
チープカシオとはチープなカシオ、つまり安価なカシオ腕時計くらいの意味だろう。
値段は高くて3,000円前後、安いものは1,000円を切るものもあった（現在は円安や部品高騰の影響で1,000円以下のものは少なくなった…）。
僕が愛用しているチープカシオは、チープカシオの代表モデルとも言うべきF-91W。
特徴は装着していることを忘れてしまうくらい軽量なこと（21g！）。
さら薄型なので冬場に、例えばMA1などリブ袖の上着を着ても邪魔にならない（8.5mm！）。
機能は、

- ストップウォッチ
- オートカレンダー
- 12/24時間制表示切替
などクオーツ腕時計が持っているはずの機能は、当然ひと通り備えている。
平均月差±30秒で、電池寿命は約7年。
しかも文字盤の下に赤く大きな文字で “WR”、さらに左右に “WATER”“RESIST” と記されているように、日常生活用防水機能付きだ。
日常生活用防水機能は、雨や汗、洗顔などでかかる水滴程度なら大丈夫というレベル。
しかし中には、服のポケットに入れたまま洗濯機に入れてしまったが、問題なく動いていたという噂もあるくらいタフなやつだ。
またF‐91Wは、通称 “ビン・ラディンモデル” とも呼ばれている。
アルカーイダの司令官であった、ウサーマ・ビン・ラーディン氏が使用していたことからその名が付いた。
アルカーイダの時限爆弾の起爆装置にも転用されていたという。
安価で正確な時間計測から採用されたのだろうが、F‐91Wにとっては嬉しくないエピソードだろう。
そんな光と影があるF‐91Wだが、それも含めて僕は気に入って使っている。
CASIO

The average monthly difference is ±30 seconds, and the battery life is about 7 years.
Moreover, it has a waterproof function for daily life, as indicated by the large red letters “WR” under the dial and “WATER” and “RESIST” on the left and right.
The waterproof function for daily life is at a level where it is okay if it is about the amount of water droplets from rain, sweat, face washing, etc.
However, it is so tough that there are rumors that it worked fine after being put in the washing machine while it was still in the pocket of the clothes.
The F-91W is also known as the “bin Laden model”.
It was named after Osama bin Laden, the commander of al-Qaeda, who used it.
It was also used as a detonator for Al-Qaeda’s time bombs.
It may have been adopted because it was cheap and accurate time measurement, but it would be an unhappy episode for the F-91W.
The F-91W has such light and shadow, but I like it and use it.
